To receive signal, the wireless radio installed outside your house must be aimed at an Internet Transmission tower owned by AlbertaHighSpeed and must have a clear view of the broadcast equipment. AlbertaHighSpeed currently has more than 10 transmission locations. If you cannot receive a clear signal, or do not have a clear line of sight to a tower location, then it may be necessary to relocate or re-align this equipment. It may also be necessary to remove obstructions such as trees, etc. that obscur a clear view of a tower.
The radio (Subscriber Module, or SM) must also have power. Check your power adapter for its green indicator light. This is the Motorola transformer the AlbertaHighSpeed installer has plugged into a wall outlet as well as into your computer or router. Also check to be sure it has not been connected backwards - power must feed to the radio, data must feed
to the computer.
For WindowsXP and Vista users, Windows Security Center may occasionally disable your local area connection. Click Start/Control Panel/Network Connections, then 'right click'
Local Area Connection. Choose 'Repair' to have Windows rebuild the connection.
It also may be necessary for your Computer or Router to renew its IP address. Repairing your local area connection as in the previous step will also renew its IP address. For Windows98 or
Windows ME users, click Start/Run and enter 'winipcfg' in the command line. This handy utility will allow you to both release and then renew your IP address.
To renew the IP address of your router, refer to the Manufacturer's instructions that were shipped with the router. Occassionally, a quick 'reboot' of the router may be all that is
required.
Reboot your router, repair your connection, or reboot your PC to re-establish your wireless connection to your router. If this is not successful, refer to your
wireless network card manufacturer's documentation to repair the connection. You will need information such as your "SSID" or "WEP" key from this documentation.
Wireless connections inside your house or office are not related to the wireless connection
AlbertaHighSpeed provides outside the house.
If you are having difficulty connecting to the Internet or sending and receiving email, try disabling your Antivirus or Firewall programs briefly. If your
connection has been restored by disabling one of these products, you may have to re-install that product.
We recommend AVG antivirus which is available from free.grisoft.com and is free of charge for home users. For WindowsXP users, be sure to enable
the Windows firewall.
Spyware, Adware, and Malware have become the Internet's worst nightmare - as bad as the hordes of junk mail in your mailbox. Basically, the culprit is
adverising - in the form of data mining, browser hijackers, redirectors, pop ups, and banner ads. These programs find their way into your computer through various sources, some with
your permission, and some without, causing various problems which all affect your Internet browsing.
We recommend cleaning your computer regularly to avoid the negative affects of Spyware and Adware. You can purchase a variety of products from retail outlets
or online, as well as some very reputable products available for download.
Popular solutions include:
Spybot Search & Destroy
Lavasoft Ad-Aware
Hijack This!
The AlbertaHighSpeed Installer will need to run a cable from the Wireless Radio outside (Subscriber Module, or SM) into the house and connect it directly to either your PC or router. This cable is also connected to a power injector (PoE adapter) that provides electricity to the SM.
It is a common misunderstanding to 'think ahead' and run coaxial cable throughout in order to save some time and expense. Coaxial cable is not correct for this application and will not aid in the installation of AlbertaHighSpeed Wireless Internet. The cable used is Cat5 and Cat5e networking data cable. The maximum distance to run this cable is 100m (328') and it is important to not exceed a bend radius of 10cm (3").
