How is the service connected?
AlbertaHighSpeed installs a Motorola Canopy Subscriber unit which is required for Internet service. The unit is installed on the roof or a high point at your location and runs a small cable to your computer or router for full access to the Internet.
Does it use phone lines, satellite, or cable?
No, our Internet service is fully wireless from our point of access to your subscriber unit. It is a completely independent system and does not rely on cable, phone lines or satellite.
Do I have to make an appointment for an installation and how long will it take?
Yes you do need an appointment. If you email us the form provided on the sign up page you will be put on the schedule to be assessed for service. A preliminary test will need to be done in order to confirm that service is available in your area. After this test is complete we will contact you to set up an appointment to install the equipment.
What exactly does the installation include?
We set up the CanopyŠ wireless equipment including any necessary cabling. We will configure your computer and do the network settings for one computer. We do not provide networking for more than one computer in a household or business situation. If you need a router and/or other extra peripheral equipment you will need to purchase and have prepared at the time of the installation. The average install itself takes about 2 hours.
Is it possible to hook up more than one computer?
AlbertaHighSpeed provides one IP address. To allow two or more computers to be connected to the system you will require additional equipment (eg. a router or gateway device). This equipment is not included with the installation.
Do you provide any kind of anti-spam or virus filtering?
Yes we have full anti-spam filtering and virus removal right at our servers. We do not guarantee this as a complete solution, and we suggest you have your own virus protection software on your computer. We do also suggest to have your own Spyware scanning and removal tools to ensure you stay protected.
Is the connection secure?
Yes, the system uses over-the-air encryption and data bit scrambling which helps to prevent any interception. The US Military currently uses the Canopy system for Internet service.
What sort of technology is being used with AlbertaHighSpeed's solutions?
We use a product called Motorola Canopy. The Canopy solution is proprietary architecture which means it is completely secure. Motorola's products and equipment can be viewed at www.canopywireless.com
What kind of contract do I need to sign?
Currently we options to acquire service with or without a contract. The basic differences are explained here.
As a condition of use in our Terms of Service, you agree that by using the Service provided by AlbertaHighSpeed, the equipment remains the property of AlbertaHighSpeed and that all liability is limited to the Internet connection only.
AlbertaHighSpeed will not be held responsible for mishaps such as data loss, identity theft, equipment failure and damage, or any other items related or unrelated to the connection to the World Wide Web. Our responsibility is for delivery of service only.
How fast is it?
We are up to 80-100 times faster than dial-up. Our speeds are comparable and are often faster than the ADSL and cable connections in Lacombe, Ponoka, and even Red Deer.
Why would I go with your wireless solution as opposed to another solution?
You may be in an area where High Speed Internet is not readily available, or perhaps you are not pleased with your existing Internet Service Provider's current service. We do our best to not 'Nickel and Dime' our customers to death.
While there may be other providers in the area, their head offices are not in Central Alberta (ie. Calgary, Saskatoon, New Brunswick, to name a few). AlbertaHighSpeed is currently the only High Speed Wireless Internet provider who's head offices and Network Operations Center have always been located 100% in the Red Deer area. We have a true local commitent to Central Alberta.
Does AlbertaHighSpeed offer any other services?
We have several web hosting and email packages, as well as many outsourced contractors who provide web site design techniques, and internal network security solutions.
